I highly recommend this book! I took an online class in Calculus and this book helped me so much. I often received problems to do that had no example in the course, but thankfully I could find an example of the problem (all worked out for me of course) in this book. I hadn't looked at math in years before taking the calculus class and I was so glad that I had this companion book to refer to for help. I actually referred to this book more than the text. I highly recommend it!

An Introduction to Difference Equations by Saber Elaydi

Review Great Calculus Book

An Introduction to Difference Equations by Saber Elaydi

An Introduction to Difference Equations by Saber Elaydi Overview

This book integrates both classical and modern treatments of difference equations. It contains the most updated and comprehensive material on stability, Z-transform, discrete control theory, and asymptotic theory, continued fractions and orthogonal polynomials. Yet the presentation is simple enough for the book to be used by advanced undergraduate and beginning graduate students in mathematics, engineering science, and economics. Moreover, scientists and engineers who are interested in discrete mathematical models will find it useful as a reference. The book contains a large set of applications in a variety of disciplines, including neural networks, feedback control, Markov chains, trade models, heat transfer, propagation of plants, epidemic models and host-parasitoid systems. Each section ends with an extensive and highly selected set of exercises.

An Introduction to Difference Equations by Saber Elaydi Review

Among the few introductory texts to difference equations this book is one of the very best ones. It has many features that the other texts don't have, e.g., stability theory, the Z-transform method (including a study of Volterra systems), and asymptotic behavior of solutions of difference equations (including Levinson's lemma) are studied extensively. It also contains very nice examples that primarily arise in applications in a variety of disciplines, including neural networks, feedback control, biology, Markov chains, economics, and heat transfer. Unfortunately, among differential and difference equations, students usually only learn about differential equations, although many problems they encounter later can be solved using difference equations. Hence it is very useful for students to study difference equations (or even, dynamic equations, which can accomodate differential and difference equations at the same time), and for such an undergraduate or beginning graduate course, Saber's book can be used as a textbook. It is particularly useful for such a purpose since it contains many exercises and also many programs for the calculator TI-85. Although the first edition did contain several misprints, the second edition has eliminated most of them. Saber's superb writing style makes reading this book very enjoyable.

Student Solutions Manual: Calculus for the Life Sciences by Lial, Greenwell, Ritchey Review

If you are majoring in the life sciences, then the authors have striven to teach calculus in a manner that will interest and motivate you. Here, life sciences encompasses both the biological sciences and various social sciences like finance and economics.

The authors customise the course via numerous examples and problems in each chapter. To be sure, in the text, outside the examples, it is a straightforward explanation of the important ideas in caculus, like finding derivates and solving differential equations. Which is as it should be. The maths is independent of the applications, after all. But much of the value of the book to you is in those examples and problems.

There is a fascinating plethora of problems. I will only cite a few: Modelling a foot and mouth disease epidemic. Alcohol concentration in a person's blood as a function of time. Rate of pollution entering a lake. The Gini coefficient of income inequality in a country.

The book shows that the uses of calculus in the life sciences are myriad and worthy of your understanding and appreciation.

Student Solutions Manual Single Variable: Thomas' Calculus: Early Transcendentals Review

I've used both Stewart's Calculus and Thomas'. Interestingly, Thomas has been writing calculus books for a LONG time and i've picked up several editions in the used book stores, because from the first time i bought a Thomas calc book back in Jr. High for my own self interest, i was a fan of his style.
His style is that of the old-school American text book authors who wrote in a clear, concise manner of English, using tangible and visual examples. Those old writers still thought of much of the material as novel, and were appealing to a more agrarian society of students.. especially the young and booming field of engineers. This is lacking in today's texts. The only drawback is that some old texts are much too impersonal and use the passive voice for everything, which can make them very difficult to read at times.
Thomas' recent editions (at least - i can not recall for the 60's era editions) are not only formally clear, but easy to understand and read. Here are the ways in which Thomas' book beats Stewart's book:
1) His explanations are accompanied by better graphics. Thomas uses more graphics to show each example and derivation. He uses MULTIPLE frames of graphics for one example, instead of just a single graphic. This makes following his train of thought much easier.. it's almost like watching a video.
2) His writing style is more complete. He leaves out fewer ideas than Stewart. Sometimes Stewart, like most authors, forgets to mention what exactly he is thinking and the reader is left trying to figure out his train of thought.
3) Thomas guides the reader through more (graphical) derivation of concepts. Sometimes, you will find derivations which Stewart relegates to problems for the reader (don't you hate that!?), are actually shown visually by Thomas!
Thomas' book is in fact probably the best calculus textbook around. I've looked at many many of them, and fraknly, none of them are this complete and well developed... The funny thing is, Thomas' book was one of the best decades ago. It has only gotten more exhaustive and more mature!
You should have this book in your reference library at least. You are more likely to find illustrative discussion on any particular introductory calculus subject in this book than you are in other books.

Student Solutions Manual for Stewart's Essential Calculus by James Stewart Review

If you've already bought the essential calculus book because you need it for whatever reason then you might as well buy the solutions manual as well. It's your only hope of ever understanding the material when trying to learn from the essential calculus book. Amazon kept their promise about the shipping by the way. I ordered it yesterday and received it today so I am very happy with that since those were the shipping plans =D.

Now I still wouldn't advise anyone to buy either of these books unless they need them for school, but if you have to buy the 1st book(or you already bought it) then make sure to buy this as well while you're at it. You'll spend more money yes, but you will save time when trying to do the homework. Where you would otherwise spend a long time even trying to come up with the right answer, you can now just look at the manual and see how they got it and get how the material works(since they only provide one measly example per problem type that REALLY doesnt prepare you in the least for the homework problems).

The 8th edition of Calculus (With Analytic Geometry) by Ron Larson, Robert P. Hostetler, Bruce H. Edwards

The 8th edition of Calculus (With Analytic Geometry) by Ron Larson, Robert P. Hostetler, Bruce H. Edwards Overview

Designed for the three-semester calculus course for math and science majors, Calculus continues to offer instructors and students new and innovative teaching and learning resources. This was the first calculus text to use computer-generated graphics, to include exercises involving the use of computers and graphing calculators, to be available in an interactive CD-ROM format, to be offered as a complete, online calculus course, and to offer a two-semester Calculus I with Precalculus text. Every edition of the series has made the mastery of traditional calculus skills a priority, while embracing the best features of new technology and, when appropriate, calculus reform ideas. Now, the Eighth Edition is the first calculus program to offer algorithmic homework and testing created in Maple so that answers can be evaluated with complete mathematical accuracy. Two primary objectives guided the authors in writing this book: to develop precise, readable materials for students that clearly define and demonstrate concepts and rules of calculus and to design comprehensive teaching resources for instructors that employ proven pedagogical techniques and saves the instructor time. The Eighth Edition continues to provide an evolving range of conceptual, technological, and creative tools that enable instructors to teach the way they want to teach and students to learn they way they learn best.

The 8th edition of Calculus (With Analytic Geometry) by Ron Larson, Robert P. Hostetler, Bruce H. Edwards Review

This is a good book in terms of content, as most of the other reviews attest to. It explains the concepts well. The one huge drawback, however, is that it will fall apart. I've always been one to take good care of my books, but these are no hope. Within a semester, my peers will have chapters falling out. I suggest you invest in a large rubber band if you get this book, you'll need it.
